Processing Method Analysis and Outstanding Performance of Black Masterbatch

Ⅰ. What are the dispersants used in the carbon black masterbatch?

There are two types of organic dispersants and inorganic dispersants. High-grade black masterbatch uses organic dispersant, mainly used for plastic products with high environmental requirements, such as drip irrigation products.

Low-grade black masterbatch uses inorganic dispersants, commonly calcium carbonate. It can be judged from the masterbatch packaging that only half a bag of 25kg must be using inorganic dispersant; the full bag is black masterbatch using organic dispersant. The use of inorganic dispersants can greatly reduce the cost of black masterbatch, but it is fatal that calcium carbonate has the effect of accelerating the aging of plastic products.

Note: In addition, calcium carbonate can inhibit the flame retardant to a certain extent in flame retardant applications. Therefore, black masterbatch containing calcium carbonate cannot be added to general flame retardant tpu materials, such as flame retardant thermoplastic elastomers.

Ⅱ. Does black masterbatch also need processing aids?

Of course. A smooth machining process requires the correct selection of antioxidants, internal lubricants, external lubricants, modifiers and antistatic agents.

Ⅲ. What are the processing methods of black masterbatch?

There are three types: single screw method, twin screw method and internal mixing method:

1. Single screw method

After mixing the materials with a mixer, they are granulated by a single screw extruder. Generally, the concentration of carbon black is 18-20%. The technology is backward and the environmental conditions of the production site are poor. The factory still uses this method for processing.

Note: At present, some enterprises use the reciprocating single-screw mixing extruder. In this model, the screw rotates and moves back and forth at the same time, and there are pins on the barrel, so the effect of mixing and dispersing is very good.

2. Twin screw method

After mixing the materials with a mixer, the twin-screw extruder is used to draw a strand or a water ring for granulation. Due to the limited mixing capacity of the twin-screw machine itself, the concentration of carbon black in the color masterbatch is generally 25-32%.

3. Mixing method

After mixing the materials with a mixer, adding them to an internal mixer for kneading, then feeding them into a twin-screw extruder from a feeder, and pelletizing them through a water ring or underwater. The concentration of carbon black in the masterbatch is generally 40-45%.

4. Does the processing method affect the performance of the masterbatch?

Yes. Obviously, the banburying method improves the carrying capacity of the carrier to the carbon black, and at the same time the carbon black can enter the carrier more uniformly.

Taking advantage of the mechanical kneading of the internal mixer, crushing the agglomerated particles, greatly reducing the agglomeration particle size of the carbon black particles, and the carbon black particle size and distribution in the masterbatch are uniform, which cannot be replaced by the other two methods.

5. What aspects of black masterbatch have outstanding performance?

In the dyeing of plastic products, black masterbatch only needs 0.6%-0.8%, it will be extremely black, and it will not be darker if you add more.

According to the test data, if the products used outdoors in Xinjiang need to rely on black masterbatch for anti-aging, they only need to use high-quality black masterbatch (instead of the return material as a carrier, white oil wetting, calcium carbonate dispersion, etc.) , the content of carbon black in the product reaches 2-2.5%, that is: per 100 kg of raw materials, there are 5-6 parts (weight) of color masterbatch containing 40% of carbon black, which plays a role far beyond any anti-aging product.
